The first 10 words out of your mouth during your presentation might be the most important you deliver.
If you lose your audience early on you will be always fighting to get them back.
If you have them from the get go, it is your audience who must fight or find reasons to leave you.
Big difference.
Create the Perfect Presentation
There are lots of tools to use to start off a presentation.
Facts, jokes, anecdotes, rhetorical questions…
Transitioning into a clear statement of your theme and how you plan to deliver on it.
Then transitioning into the first of your points.
This is good form.
But, in my opinion, it is the first few words out of your mouth that really matter.
“Thank you for inviting me.” …. NOT.
“I am really excited to be here.” …. NOT.
“Wasn’t that a great lunch?” …. NOT
Here are some that I have used lately.
“I am going to do something today that has never been done before.”
“The ability to change the world is literally at your fingertips.”
“Travel agents change people’s lives.”
I can and do at some point thank the organizers or the person responsible for getting me there, but it’s never the first words out of my mouth.
Conclusion
Your introduction is crucial to grabbing your listeners, then keeping them.
Get those first 10 words right. Then deliver on them and you will be on your way to a perfect presentation.
