I do lectures on cruise ships. Sometimes they are referred to as seminars. Sometimes talks.
I also hear a LOT of presentations on a variety of topics in a not a few different fields.
Additionally, I get asked to speak to a wide range of audiences whose interests are as diverse as the population of the Bay Area of San Jose – where I live.
This qualifies me to give feedback to other presenters and other speaker wannabes – be it a presentation to colleagues, research results in a class seminar, a toast, a pitch to investors, a sales presentation to clients or any such animal.

A day or so ago a young lady told me she had 8 minutes (I don’t remember the exact time but it was short) to make a presentation to a group of other speaker trainees.
“What are you going to talk about?”
Many words later I finally figured out that she wanted to talk about the steps to take to organize events and groups of people who have a like mind to organize similar events. … I think.
More words and I understood how difficult it was for her and the pains she went through to learn her lessons. Thus, she wanted to share those lessons. Why not?
I was shy. This is my second language and I am living in a different culture. And and …
I got it.
I suggested she speak on ‘Getting Out of Your Comfort Zone?’ Then go into the lessons she learned, how her world opened up and the network of like-minded people who are now surrounding her as a result came to be.
Lights went on.
Her presentation will be pretty much the same, but the message will be different. Her listeners will go home thinking “If I get out of my comfort zone, there’s a new world waiting for me.”
When was the last time you stepped out of your comfort zone? Was it worth it? What did you learn?
