One of the best things a speaker can do to prepare for their next presentations is to get in shape.
Indeed round is a shape. But it is not the preferred shape for the cruise ship lecturer. Easy as it is to become round when food is available 24/7 while at sea.
My last cruise – food was more readily available than the gym was open. Not a good balance.
When the speaker is in good physical shape s/he will have a natural bounce in their step. They will bound up on stage.
I once spoke in a very long – left-to-right – room with 3 big screens – right, left and center.
I like to roam when I talk. And I like to be at floor level with my listeners.
In this particular case, I found myself running (Okay, a slow trot) from left to right to point at something on a slide that was larger than me.
I didn’t try to be energetic. I have energy. And if I don’t use it with physical movement, I will talk way too fast.
Energy can be seen in a speaker by the color in his/her face, and heard by the intensity in his/her voice and in the speed by which s/he moves.
Bringing energy to a talk is good form if you want to raise the level from good to great.
First things first … hit the gym.
