My agent just sent me a list of upcoming cruises that are looking for various speakers.

It occurred to me that some readers might not know the difference.
Question: What’s the definition of a Destination-Related Special Interest Speaker
Answer: The Destination-Related Special Interest Speaker is someone who can offer up a series of talks, lectures, sometimes called seminars based on general topics that are related to the itinerary.
Here’s a short list:
1. music of the region
2. important people of the region
3. art of the region

4. geology of the region
5. geography of the region
6. history of the region
In other words, when travelers get beyond the immediate shopping district and look at other ‘stuff’ they will think “Oh, this is what Speaker Dudette was talking about.”
It is NOT regurgitating Lonely Planet or Fodor’s. It is telling people something they might know or haven’t read up that genuinely enriches their experience.
I visited the Hermitage when I was in St. Petersburg, Russia. It was still Leningrad at the time. As we toured the paintings, my friend was telling who painted what and when and how long it took them. I started telling her the stories that were IN the painting. Before long there were 40+ people surrounding us listening to me tell stories about something they didn’t know.
Do that!

Hi
I am based in the UK and work freelance in a variety of travel roles; leading treks, tour director on coach trips, educational visits for American high school students etc. I have a Masters in history and love finding out about places and passing on new insights. I would be interested in acting as a destination speaker on a cruise and understand that this would be an unpaid position. Do I need to register with an agency, and if so which one would be a good fit for me?
