I learned a lot of lessons ‘on the run.’ Literally. Not from the law … but in my triathlon and ultramarathon days. Some 40-50 lbs ago. Yeesh!
Work Your Stengths
One of the most valuable lessons I learned while training for these marathon events was
“Train your weaknesses. Race your strengths.”
When practicing, I’d work on things I wasn’t good at. Climbing on the bike, sprinting to get out of a group when running. A longer stroke to get out of a crowd when swimming. And so on.
But when the race was on, I’d do best what I do best.

It’s the same when speaking on a cruise ship. Anywhere for that matter.
Train Your Weaknesses
You can practice your gestures, your voice, your pace, your articulation, your timing and such when you are NOT on stage. But when you are on stage … stick to your strengths.
Indeed, in time, you will find that the weaknesses you have been working on in practice will slowly make their way to being a strength. But, on stage is NOT the place to practice.
It’s like wearing a new pair of shoes to a race. Then mid race you find they don’t fit, they rub and they are heavy.
Talk your strengths.
