One of the reasons that talks come across really well is because there is a good match between audience and speaker.
Choose Your Audience:
- “Who would I like to speak to?”
- “Who is my ideal audience?”
- “Who can benefit the most from my message?”
Of course, the cruise ship lecturer doesn’t have that luxury unless… now think about it … unless you have a talk that is prepared just for them.
Too often, the speaker brings a talk that s/he has created for some other purpose on to the ship and makes tweaks so it will match the cruisers. Bringing a canned talk is NOT choosing your audience. That would be requiring your audience to come to your talk.
When I know I am going to speak on a cruise ship, I research the demographics of the ship and the voyage I am going to be on. I check out the destinations. That kind of thing.
Recently I spoke on a cruise from Miami to the Old World. I discovered that there were going to be a large percentage of Brits on the cruise.
My topic is Social Media (what I do in my other life). I researched LinkedIn facts about Brits and other European countries instead of stuffing facts about the US down their throats.
Each Audience is Special in a Perfect Presentation
When I was done, my audience knew that I was there for them. They were the audience I had in mine when I prepared.
I could tell them with a clear conscience that if I were to pick the audience I was going to deliver my talk it would be them. Because it would.
Choose your audience = prepare specifically for the people you will be presenting to and you will be on your way to a perfect presentation.
