There are three big mistakes cruise ship seminar leader can make.
They should be avoided at all cost.
And if you need a reason, consider that the ship is very serious when they say “When terms of the contract are violated, the speaker can be disembarked at the next port to find their own way home.” Or some such words.
The warning is not meant to be threatening or intimidating, but to emphasize that you, the cruise ship seminar leader, are being taken quite seriously.

The 3 mistakes and how to avoid them:
1. Failure to embrace the listeners – this happens when the speaker and his/her topic are a complete disconnect to the audience. Get there early. Practice. Know your demographics. Be flexible and sensitive to changes in the audience.
2. Self-promotion – for a long time (not on a cruise ship) I had to use my own ‘successes’ because they were the only case studies I had. Now I use the successes of my students. Don’t talk about yourself. Don’t sell. If you are worth it, your listeners will hunt you out.
3. Resisting feedback – Seldom will someone tell you that you did a lousy job. But in your heart of hearts the speaker knows how well they did. If they are not honest with themselves and don’t make adjustments, disaster looms. To be sure, there is indeed feedback offered up from time to time. Take note.
Take proactive steps to avoid these mistakes and not only will you stay out of trouble, you will have a better cruise ship lecture.
