Not everything that goes wrong is somebody else’s or something else’s fault.
Some things are the cruise ship speaker’s fault.
I can think of three to start. There are surely more.
3 Reasons Why Cruise Ship Seminar Leaders FAIL
1. Focusing too much on the content and not on the delivery. Think back to the sermon on Sunday or the last class you attended. What do you remember more, the content of the sermon or lecture, or the looks and gestures of the person who delivered them.
There must be content. But delivery can be equally if not more important.
2. Overestimating your audience. Just because you know something, you can’t nor shouldn’t assume the audiences does. You are not talking about something you collectively know. You are telling them something they don’t know.
If they knew everything you did, then why would they need you?
3. Trying to deliver too much in too little time. The less said, the more remembered. For a 30 minute talk prepare enough material that you need 90-120 minutes to deliver it all. Then talk real fast! NOT!! Tighten your presentation up. Trim the fat. Choose more concise terminology. Create slides that deliver content so you don’t have to.
Make sure you deliver on your topic. But leave your listeners itching to know what else you have to say.
Lots of things can go wrong with your presentation that are not your fault. Make sure that you control what you can.
