I’m going diving for the second time at Mexico’s Cozumel. It’s just a short ferry ride from the jewel of the Yucatan, Cancun. But it’s WAAY cheaper. OK, not as many attractions, but you can easily bop over to the mainland for a day. The Mayan sites of Chichen Itza, Tulum and the fancy dan hotels are neat to see – once.

Tbis area of Mexico has been spared the horror of the drug cartels, so things are safe. Watch for pickpockets like anywhere.

Cozumel is Mexico’s largest Caribbean island and so it has the largest number of residents (100K). Actually, Mexico doesn’t have a whole lot of islands, so this is kinda cheating.

The king of civilian scuba diving, Frenchman Jacques Cousteau loved the underwater kingdom there. Yeah! My experience is that it’s a lot of drift diving. The boat lets you off and you glide at 40-50 feet and then pop up. Lion fish are rampant there. They are beautiful but have no predators and are eating everything on the reef. Caution if you snorkel…they sting bad.

The sleepy village town is seeing a lot more cruise ships. I dunno, that many people hitting the streets all at once will overtax the only McDonalds. They land about 8 ships a day. Once, while drift diving, two guys slid right into one. The security guards on board shoo’ed them off.

I just can’t imagine what it will be like when the Gozilla of the Seas docks there. 6,000 heads. Cozumel is just NOT set up for the influx.

San Miguel is the town that rocks….a few restaurants, but not a ton of ticky-tacky souvenir shops. I dunno – there is just not enough to occupy tourists. The local government likes it, but the residents fear the daily influx.
