In a previous post I wrote that storytelling should be included in the cruise ship speaker’s toolkit.
Don’t Look Down on Your Listeners
It’s one thing to try to teach your listeners a lesson.
It’s quite another to share with your listeners how you learned a lesson.
Storytelling is a great medium to get a point across without being condescending.
When the cruise ship speaker tells a story, s/he can become vulnerable. The listener can put him/herself in the speaker’s shoes.
The listener can learn along with the speaker the same lessons the speaker learned.
Show Your Listeners Respect
Storytelling is a terrific medium to show your listeners that you respect them.
It is possible to teach a hard lesson with your peers, even your superiors with good storytelling.
When your listeners can say to themselves, “Been there, done that.” Or, “I have never been that stupid.” Or, “I have never tried that before.” then you have made a great connection, your story has resonated.
Tell good stories and listeners from all walks of life will identify with you and your cruise ship talk.
