Cruise ship speakers have a captive audience.
Conversation Among Cruisers at Sea
What else is there to do in the middle of the ocean or sea?
“Well, honey. Let’s go hear the talk on Silicon Valley?”
“Eh?! What?!”
“The TALK ON SILICON VALLEY!!”
“Uh, sure. I guess.”
Cruisers don’t want to be lectured. They don’t want to be taught. They don’t want to be uplifted.
Cruisers Want Entertainment
What cruisers want is to be entertained.
To be sure, there are few things more entertaining than a good story.
Think Paul Harvey and “The Rest of the Story.”
Think of the many yarns told by Zig Ziglar.
Gosh, even the Bible is something like 70% told in story form.
Learn the Art of Storytelling
The cruise ship speaker who learns the art of storytelling can be assured that s/he will be a hit. Not only that, their talk will be memorable, too!
I just returned from Shanghai. I was in a business lecture format and I was pretty proud of all the homework I did, the statistics I could share, the shoring up of my main points.
When I was done, not a few of my students, business folks mind you, approached me. I was ready for some serious praise given all the hard work I had done to substantiate myself.
“Bill, I loved your story about …”
“Me, too.”
“Me, too!”
Stories have impact. Stories are memorable. Stories are entertaining.
The moral of the story … tell good stories!
