In any forum, especially on cruise ships, when asked a question, REPEAT IT for the rest of the audience. Folks on the far side of the venue may not hear it. Many ships video you for later playback in passengers cabins and they will only hear what comes out of your microphone.
At in-person venues, when you are not cruising, do the same. A bonus is that while you are repeating and clarifying it, you brain has time to come up with an answer. Speak slowly and directly answer the question. No rambling – it cuts into your time!
Whether or not you have a mic, the same rules apply. And be sure to repeat any follow-on questions. It’s very easy to slip into a mode that you feel like you are now talking just to that one person. You will get many silly questions you think: “Didn’t you listen to my talk?” Be kind and come up with an answer that does not embarrass the person. If you don’t know an answer – admit it. But get back to the person after researching the correct reply.
