Single travelers: should the speaker mingle or is this taboo? | What’s the current singles situation?

Often I sail alone when giving talks on cruise ships. I kind of like it. I get to go where and when I want.  Many ships have a special “Singles Meeting” for all unaccompanied passengers. This is not a dating source, but just for a way for folks to meet others. It is a great way to find a buddy to share time with.  In the mixer atmosphere, you might actually hit it off with one or more.

Is it OK for YOU as a semi-crew, semi-passenger to attend? I say sure, just don’t get too friendly with anyone of the opposite sex. That said, let’s look at the current state of singles cruises. I’m sharing this in case you don’t have a speaking assignment, but really want to take a specific cruise. Many lines are reducing or waiving the single supplement. For the most up to date info check with the individual cruise lines or a cruise agent.

A few of the huge ships have built single cabins – very few, but it’s a start. NCL’s Norwegian Epic has 128, and some ships of Costa Cruises also have a few. Be the first to call and you might get one.

Luxury cruise lines such as Cunard, Crystal, and Seabourn are popular with single cruisers, and often run specials. Silversea is now offering single supplements many cruises this year. As usual, the deals get sweeter the closer to departure. If  you are flexible, this  might work out.
