Why professional trade conferences have such lousy speakers

Cruise Ship Speaker – Belew

I speak at conferences a lot. I get paid to do some. And I offer my services to others knowing that I will do a good enough job that someone will approach me to:

1. Use my services – social media marketing

2. learn how to speak on cruise ships – I do this. As does Rick, the other principal here at SpeakOnCruises He is on a 10-day cruise now to the north east of the US and along the east coast.

It is no mystery, there are some pretty lousy speakers at some, okay most of the conferences I am invited to.

Read: Marketing Team – How to Create.

Does anybody wonder why? And what can be done?

Many of the speakers pay to be there. That is, they are sponsors and get a ‘spot’ or time ‘slot’ to present.

Those speakers paid there and want to get their money back = sales, giving the attendees a bad experience. Nobody wants to pay to be sold to.

Another source of speakers are those who are experts in their field but NOT professional speakers. Nor did they want to be a professional speaker. They just know something and have been tapped to share that knowledge the best they can. Nothing wrong here. They just aren’t speakers.

I get asked to speak. It is not my first or even second source of income. But I do it because I get asked to a lot. And I am of the mind that if you are going to do something you should be as good at it as possible.

Attendees invariably pay to learn so I want to serve.

In truth … I don’t do the karma thing. I don’t expect things to come around. I know they will … but it isn’t my motivation.

My desire is to serve. to give the listeners the best experience possible.

I am not worried about the lousy column. I want to know how high on the great column I can climb. The ‘rest’ will take care of itself.
