Speakers Need a Tagline

First get out a piece of paper.

Got the paper? Then read on.

In 10 words or less, what do you speak about? Write it down.

Now remove all the adjectives (qualifies what you speak about doesn’t say what you speak about.)

Remove all the adverbs (tells how you talk, not what you talk)

Get rid of prepositions (gives context and direction but not what).

Avoid conjunctions and articles – no a, an, the, and, but, or …

What’s your tagline now?

If you can’t articulate in 10 words or less (not 11+) what you talk about then you don’t know what you talk about. Nor will the people who ask you know.

Try out some different combinations with unsuspecting folk and watch their response. Be honest with yourself and you will know whether they ‘get’ your or not.

Having a tagline gives you focus. And answers the question to would be organizers looking for the right speaker.

“Bill, what do you speak about?”

“How to beat anybody at anything with social media marketing.”

“Bill, what do you speak about?”

“Accomplishing your life’s mission with lessons learned from online marketing.”
