This is another characteristic that a group of National Speaker Association members came up with a brainstorming session that they, the speakers, would like to improve – stage presence.
It’s hard to have good stage presence if/when you are stuck behind a podium.
To have good stage presence the speaker must:
1. have mastery of their material. If you must read your notes you can’t do it.
2. have mastery of their presentation tools. If you don’t know how to work a remote, you’re cooked. If you must stand behind your computer or move the mouse or the cursor arrows to get to the next slide in your deck, you’re toast.
Related: Improve your use of presentation tools.
3. have a wireless microphone. I haven’t used a hand-held microphone in a very long time.
4. be willing to roam. I always check out my venue early and walk the platform. I want to know what I can and can’t see as I move about the stage … even if I were to step down off the stage. I do that a lot
When you know your material, can flip through your slides from anywhere, can stand anywhere and are willing to go anywhere, your audience will be willing and must follow you anywhere … because they won’t know where you are going till you get there.
