
Professional cruise ship lecturers need to be flexible on board luxury lines, too.
In a previous post I wrote about an incident I had on a luxury cruise line with my presentations that called for some flexibility and professionalism.
Just because everything around me is perfect, it doesn’t mean everything will go perfect.
Another example:
I spoke 5 times.
Each time I spoke I was in the ship’s largest venue with the possibility of having the largest crowd. I also had the largest screen and two smaller side screens.
Great!
Lecture 1 – check
Lecture 2 – check
Lecture 3 – check
Lecture 4 – um, where’s the tech support. The rule of thumb is 15-20 minutes early at the venue for the speaker to get set up and make sure things work. I was there. The big screen had a piano and a drum set in front of it.
The sound didn’t work and no other video hook ups were available.
15 minutes before, 12, 10, 9, 8, 7 … he finally shows up. No time to gain access to the big screen. My audience has to suffer through viewing only the side screens … which were not big considering the open space between chairs and screen.
All that to say, things do NOT always go as expected even when they are mostly like supposed to go as expected.
Be flexible. Be prepared. Make do.
Lecture 5 – tech support was there way early and things went very very smoothly.
