Why do cruise ship speakers need a sense of humor?
So, you are on the stage? And everybody is looking up to you? Literally.
It’s not hard for the speaker to think more highly of themselves. After all, they are up higher.
In this context, I want to emphasize that the speaker cannot take themselves too seriously.
Of course, it helps to be funny, to be able to tell a joke. But that’s not what I mean.
It helps more if the speaker can laugh at themselves. And let their audience enjoy a laugh at their ( the speaker’s) expense.
It is never good form to tell jokes that place people into categories. You can be absolutely sure somebody will get offended one way or another.
If I do tell a joke, or make light of a situation, I ALWAYS make myself the butt of the joke. Hard to go wrong that way.
Speakers need to know they are not almighty, they do NOT have all answers to all questions, they can make mistakes. Roll with them. Laugh at yourself.
Bloggers tend to equate the publish button and readers with authority. Speakers think because they have a stage and an audience they are the authority. And indeed the speaker might be an authority.
Even so, you have to be right to be right.
Learn to laugh at yourself.
We can get you on board.
