I may be wrong but it seems to me the only way most speakers know how to inspire people is by telling them how they failed, then came back. How they got sick, then got better.
Really? Is that all there is?
I can think of 20 other ways to inspire others. Maybe more if I put my mind to it.
- Be yourself – People love people who have the courage to be themselves, to throw off all airs and pretenses and inhibitions. Unless, of course, you are a real jerk, everybody has told you and you don’t listen.
- Share lessons learned – People love to hear from somebody who has ‘been there, done that.’ Tell listeners what you did well, what you did poorly. Tell them about how well things turned out and when they didn’t turn out so well … and why you think that happened.
- Focus on your character – There is that person you admire for their moral compass, their unfailing integrity, there unshakeable reliability. Be that person.
- Tell the truth – Don’t misquote. Don’t embellish or exaggerate. Don’t insult your listeners by not giving them the real skinny.
- Communicate clearly – “Never use 10 words when two will do,” T Jefferson. “Everything should be made as simple as possible. But not simpler,” A. Einstein.
