A good speaker is good.

Yeah, of course. What I want to say is that people, young and old, still can be captured, become enthralled, will engage in good storytelling.

I hear often, “People want everything to be free.” Well, they always did. But the truth is, if the product is worth it, people will pay.

I often hear as well, “Nobody wants to listen. They want to do or see or experience.” That’s always been true as well. But, if the speaker is good, people will settle in and listen.

What’s it take to grab and keep an audience?

1. A deep and unwavering commitment to your topic. Some call it passion. You gotta want people to listen before they will want to listen.

2. Solid insight into your audience: disconnects between speakers happen. But not if and when you do your homework.

3. Confidence that you have something to offer: I heard a speaker who was absolutely convinced she had something to offer to a group of writers. That was until she stood up and talked. She had zero ability (this is being kind. I’d actually like to go negative) to express confidence in her knowledge, information, experience and how it might benefit the listeners.

Commitment, insight and confidence are almost palpable. When an audience senses these in a speaker, the audience will calm down, engage and stay with the speaker.
