In the early days of video from PC’s, VGA (Video Graphics Array was used…. It was developed by IBM in 1987…. the resolution was very low. Today it’s just called “VGA resolution”. The connector between the PC and the projector has 15 pins and it is Analog…and so you can’t get HD (High Definition) quality images on the screen . . . very old technology. Many laptops are not even made with them.  It’s video only and to get audio, you have to plug in a speaker system to your headphone jack.

HDMI is High-Definition Multimedia Interface.  It sends HD video AND audio to the projector. It is much better than VGA. It is continually being updated as it is state of the art. MOST laptops have HDMI jacks on them and even your home big screen has a few jacks for your DVD player and other gizmos….VGA is  so old it does not. 

Two lessons I learned while on a recent cruise as a speaker.

If you are speaking on a cruise ship, usually the A/V Dept will be ready for you to plug in. If you use an Apple, you need a converter to change from their DVI output to HDMI. Usually, if so, you must bring your own. Beyond that the Apple will work fine…iPads will not work.

It’s always good to bring your own cables and connectors.
