Savannah, GA turns down chance to host Cruise Ships

The stately town of Savannah is a jewel of the south. It’s location on the Atlantic coast is the vacation dream of many. The City Council recently voted down a proposal to built a welcoming terminal for cruise ships. They did a four year study at a cost of over $300K to lead them to vote the idea down.

BEA, a consulting company studying the idea, made too many assumptions on the viability of a terminal. The council felt that most boarding passengers would go directly to the ship and not spend much enroute. Nearby Charleston’s ship terminal actually lost revenue in 2012.

A local group called “Be Smart Savannah” stressed the plight of other port cities such as Mobile, San Diego, Houston and Norfolk. The council voted and there will be no Cruise ship terminal in Savannah. Guess you’ll have to fly in to see the romantic Forsyth Park Fountain.
