Continuing the thoughts from 2 days ago, it’s interesting to learn the strategy of the big cruise line. Godzilla ships rolling out are just too big for many people considering them. Now Royal Caribbean is building an 8,000 passenger behemoth.

These mega ships (5,000 pax and up) need special dockside services that strain the resources of most harbors. Docks are outfitted for ships built 20 years ago and cities don’t want to spend the capital required to host the larger ships. Although the ports enjoy the extra fees and merchants love to see wallets full of tourist dollars, often the sheer mass of people descending upon a town is more than it can bear.
By offering “normal” size ships, a balance is made between the old and the new. The impact is being played out in Venice now as the debate rages on putting a large ship terminal far out to deeper water.
