“Fire in the hole” – Royal Caribbean ship burns in Jamaica

Freedom of the Seas fire on upper deck

The 5,400 passenger Royal Caribbean Freedom of the Seas cruise ship had a fire on July 22 while on a Jamaica trip. The photo shows black smoke billowing out.

The cause was not pinpointed but the line said it was centered in a mechanical room. One crew member was slightly injured. No passengers were affected. All were directed to their life boat substations. It pays to pay attention during the pre-departure briefing.  Do you??

On board fire suppression systems worked fine and the ship is back on track. Stops will include George Town, Grand Cayman; and Cozumel, Mexico. I was recently on a dive trip to Cozumel and saw at least two RC ships docked.
We share this kind of news to keep speakers informed of what’s going on in their industry. If you are thinking of giving lectures on cruise ships – we teach how to do it.
Maybe your 4 talks could be about fires, and how they are controlled. I’d find that interesting. The ships crew are trained and drilled on passenger safety. Kudos to Royal Caribbean for their fast action.
