Croatia’s jewel of the tourist industry is the medieval town of Dubrovnik.

It has been swamped with tourists in the last few years, such that the city fathers have decided to make it livable for the residents again. The first step was to reduce the number of cruise ships, with 5,000 people allowed at one time. In 2019, a maximum of two cruise ships will be allowed arrive.

Also, each passenger will be assessed about a dollar. This will be paid by the cruise ship to the city. This new tax will begin in 2021. This can raise $1M USD for infrastructure improvements and will help the transport systems.
The tax for temporary housing units will also increase.
Dubrovnik is a World Heritage Site and that status may be revoked if the overcrowding is not reduced.
It’s a wonderful place. Since I was there, it has become “the” place to go – Why? The TV show Game of Thrones was filmed there. Groupies need to see the on-location spots that appeared in the show. I bet I have my own photos of some of those and don’t even know it. But then, I don’t watch TV, so I don’t miss it.
