It’s now officially “cruise season” for ships heading to Alaska. Vancouver, BC is forecast to host 243 ships departing for the north. Those will be done by 29 cruise ships. That is an amazing number of cruises.
Classic stops are: Juneau, Ketchikan, Skagway, Sitka and Glacier Bay. SpeakOnCruises can help you snag a free trip by lecturing. In Glacier Bay, you will get up close to the calving chunks fo ice. Don’t expect it to be like the specials on TV. We waited about a half hour to see just one. I had to get a copy of the video from a fellow passenger.
There are 600 “named glaciers in Alaska. And an estimated 100,000 others. Further, it’s estimated the total area of Alaska’s glaciers at about 34,000 square miles of ice. To put that figure in perspective, that much blue ice would cover the entire state of Maine. 98% of the state’s glaciers are shrinking, losing over 20 cubic miles of ice each year.

I’ve been 3 times and it is one of my favorite destinations. There is so much to see and do. I even brought my hiking gear and at each stop I asked where to go hiking and headed up the mountain. It’s surprisingly warm on the summer cruises. Some towns are even “shorts & sandals” ready.
