2016 to see Royal Caribbean roll out yet another “Oasis” class ship: Harmony of the Seas

What is the largest cruise ship on the oceans? It seems to be changing regularly. Royal Caribbean’s line of passenger ships with capacity of 5,000+ ships keep coming out of the shipyards faster than they can be measured. They are set to launch world’s LARGEST cruise ship in 2016 – Harmony of the Seas.

Backgrounder -> Oasis class ships

The Oasis class means the behemoths: named “XXX of the Seas” ships where XXX = Quantum, Anthem, Ovation, Oasis, and Harmony. They are all basically the same – just pumped up.

They are like small cities with fun built in. Royal Caribbean is investing Billions to capture more of the huge travel market. Estimates of well over 21 million passengers year is the lure.

Royal Caribbean will continue to amaze by including water slides, a Central Park of real grass and plants exposed to the outside and other amenities. Let’s hope salt water spray doesn’t kill them! Of course, robot bartenders are a given.

The Harmony will have VERY high speed internet to allow streaming and even Skype. Most other systems bog down when hundreds try to access the system. Royal Caribbean says they have solved the technical issues. If you bring kids, don’t plan on getting much rest. The old days of “Marco-Polo” at the pool are being replaced by a real carousel, and seven “neighborhoods” featuring the Pool and Sports Zone, Vitality at Sea Spa and Fitness Center, Entertainment Place and Youth Zone.

The Harmony of the Seas is now just a shell but was put into the water to float on its own in June. It is being outfitted for a 2016 first sailing. The size?? It will weigh 227,000 tons and measure 362 meters in length; that’s 50 meters longer than the height of the Eiffel Tower!!

It will carry 6,360 passengers and 2,100 staff members. That’s 8,460.  My home town wasn’t that big! I think everyone should wear name badges and carry a passport to get from one end to other!!
