Chinese market in sights for major cruise lines | Costa and Royal Caribbean moving in

The Costa brand is now penetrating China and is being joined by Royal Caribbean. RC has announced that they are sending the Godzilla of ships, the ‘Quantum of the Seas’ cruise ship to Shanghai.

Take a look at anything you own….”Made in China” means we are paying for their fun. Of course, if they call in our debt, they own us. There is a lot of discretionary money over there and we need to get some of it.

A Quantum class ship breaching?

It’s rare to see Chinese on ships. If there were dedicated first class ships with Chinese-speaking staff and amenities, they would push and shove to get onboard. Shanghai is the perfect place to base them. The river there is huge and the port handles products heading east.

Cruise Lines International Association, says that from 2012 to 2014 Chinese passengers increased 79 percent per year.

While Western cruisers are generally older, the market in China is the young worker with cash to burn. With the earth’s largest population, saavy lines are getting the message. The Quantum can hold so many, there are time zones on board. I have not been on one of the RC giants – I’d like to just to see it. With 4200 guests, it would be easy to go missing for days.

Giant US aircraft carriers actually have sailors go AWOL. That’s big!
