15 Skills a Professional Cruise Ship Lecturer Needs to Work an Audience | Dumb Things Speakers Say

Work Your Audience

Work Your Audience

Speakers, like children, can say the dumbest things.

“I am happy to be here.”

“I am so excited to be here.”

“I am really passionate about this message.”

“I am going to tell you.”

If the speaker is happy it should be plainly evident in the expression on their face, in their mannerisms, in the bounce in their voice.

Excited? More often than not when a speaker starts off with “I am really excited to be here today …” they are NOT trying to convince their listeners of their joy, but are trying to convince themselves.

Passionate? Margaret Thatcher once said that being a leader is like being a lady. If you have to tell people you are, then you aren’t.

If a speaker is passionate it will come across as intensity, enthusiasm, natural volume, speed (quick or slow) and earnestness in delivery.

Every now and then I hear coaches tell their speaker wannabes, “You need to try to be more genuine.”

Huh? You can’t try to be genuine. You are or aren’t genuine.

When you are working an audience. Be happy. Be excited. Be passionate. And let it show.

Then watch for your audience to respond.
